How To Take Outfit Pictures
Lighting
The most important tip I can give you for taking photos; make sure you have good lighting! Even if you have the cutest outfit, perfect pose, and your makeup is poppin', the photos will not look professional if the lighting is off. By “good lighting” I mean that it should not be too dark or too harsh. I have found that the best photos come from natural lighting outside or near a window. If you want to take pictures when it’s dark outside, I would recommend using a ring light! You can get a great ring light for fairly cheap on amazon. In the office, we like to use a ring light that is attached to a tripod with an attachment for your phone.
Movement
Creating movement in your photos is the easiest way to make them look as natural as possible. Simply walking toward or away from the camera can create a candid pose that will have your followers thinking you’re an expert! Another tip for creating movement can be to flip your hair from side to side. Sounds simple, but it works! Lastly, if you have on a flowy top, skirt, or dress, do a little spin, this will take your outfit pics to the next level!
Use Props
Sometimes the hardest part of getting a good picture is figuring out what to do with your hands. Here's an easy fix: grab some accessories! A purse, sunglasses, or even iced coffee will give you something to hold on to so your pose will look more natural. Sunglasses are my personal go-to because putting your hands up to touch the glasses can give such a cool vibe to your photos. You can also whip up a charcuterie board and you've got an insta worthy set that doubles as a tasty snack!
Mirror Selfies
A mirror selfie can be a great option for taking outfit pics when you’re short on time or don’t have someone to take photos of you! Mirror selfies are one of those things that you need to practice and try out different poses to see what works best for you. I would recommend making sure your mirror is clean! If you know you’re going to be taking photos in a dressing room, you might consider bringing along a small bottle of glass cleaner and some paper towels. Also, make sure the background is neat and tidy. If you have clutter in the background it can be distracting to the main focus of the photo (you)!
Editing
Another very important factor in getting the perfect outfit picture is editing! Nowadays it seems like many people tend to over-edit their photos. People are more drawn to photos that look as natural as possible, so try to keep this in mind while editing your pics. Editing styles are different for everyone, so play around and see what you like best. If you’re going to use a filter, go for one that is light and airy and gives a sunkissed look. Some of our favorite editing apps are Adobe Lightroom, VSCO, Facetune, or Tezza! Pro Tip: If you want your background to appear lighter, use the whitening tool on Facetune to whiten a wall or building behind you. Or, if you have any blemishes you want to get rid of, use the healing tool on Adobe Lightroom to cover up! Of course, you don’t need to edit your photos at all if you don’t want to, these are just some optional tips!
I hope these tips were helpful for you all, happy selfie-ing!
